AI and accelerated decision making

Did you ever see an Eagle scan, zoom in and capture its prey? Ultimate precision decision making at high speed.

Did you ever see an Eagle scan, zoom in and capture its prey? Ultimate precision decision making at high speed.

Human beings are similarly amazing. From our earliest days we’ve built tools that have helped us make the right decisions to thrive.

However, despite all the amazing achievements, the human brain is unsuited to decision making in the ever complex systems that humans are building, both in business and society as a whole. Examples of where we are potentially out of our depth include:

  • The natural trade-off between accuracy and speed for identifying objects and patterns. As patterns become more complex our processing or accuracy slows down significantly.
  • Vigilance, focus and general attention differs between people, but we are generally limited to short bursts as opposed to prolonged periods of focus, especially if the task is repetitive.
  • Biased decision making. Our brains naturally look for patterns in data and we may inadvertently ignore areas that are potentially critical.

As humans have generated more data, we have also created a set of rapidly evolving tools that assist us in improving our decision-making ability, such as spreadsheets, data warehouses and BI systems. These tools all have one thing in common, they collect, store and manipulate data as discrete, clearly identified units of information.

Unfortunately, these methods for processing data are terrible at working with “fuzzy” information such as that found in nature and even the built environment. Fuzzy refers to the fact that items with the same label may have slightly different characteristics in terms of size, colour or shape. For example; think of a tree and all the different permutations that might occur in nature or identifying a chicken leg for a bento box.

Ironically, the human brain is great for working with this type of non-binary information but, as discussed, it hits a wall once that data reaches a certain volume within a short timeframe.

There are strong analogies, between the eye and the camera: Iris/diaphragm, retina/CCD sensors, sensitivity of retina/ISO, crystalline/focus systems, and a natural extension of these correlations is to analyse the data captured by cameras, drones or satellites and bring meaning and ultimately allow us to initiate and direct action, either by us or robots.

Which brings us to the latest and greatest tool in our arsenal and a technology that addresses the challenges associated with vast amounts of “fuzzy” data: Artificial Intelligence.

A.I. is a quantum leap forward in our ability to analyse huge amounts of data and respond in real-time with almost human like intuition. The power of A.I. comes from the fact that the data provided doesn’t need to neatly fit within a cell in a spreadsheet or a row in a database in order for it to be used to make decisions.

Every day in enterprise, vast amount of visual data is captured for post processing by the human eye, such as:

  • Construction site security
  • Sports events
  • Highway corridors
  • Oil rig safety
  • Pipeline inspections

Imagine if you could apply A.I. technology to work with the visual data collected across your business and deliver informed recommendations in real-time to the people or systems responsible for acting on them.

At Unleash live, we observed this challenge unfolding over the last few years and deliver a scalable cloud-based collaboration tool which ingests live video and imagery from virtually any source and applies industry specific A.I. algorithms to recognise and act on this data.

Unleash live specialises in the application of A.I. algorithms to live video and imagery, however, each industry best knows its own challenges, so we work closely with industries such as railway, oil & gas, construction, mining and emergency services to build the intelligence needed to allow fast and accurate, industry specific decision making.

If you are looking at ways to improve the accuracy and speed of your business’ decision making, get in touch and we can walk you through our assessment tool which will kick start your adoption of A.I.
